Europe is composed of 50 separate sovereign nations, with distinct cultures and histories. Greece is considered the birthplace of western culture, and many people yearn to explore the ruins of the ancient cities that brought the western way of life into existence. From there, empires, kingdoms, and unions have come and gone, leaving behind a plethora of historical sites.

Not only are their the numerous countries with distinct cultures, but there is a diverse landscape. The continent is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, having more coastline to landmass than any other continent. The central continent climbs skyward with the rugged peaks of the Alps, while the northern countries are precariously close to sea level.

Because of all this diversity and history there is a huge variety of different types of locations to visit. From wildlife refuges and natural wonders, to concentration camps and workhouses, from cities and shores, to castles and cathedrals.

Of the 50 European countries, 27 are part of the European Economic union, making traveling from country to country relatively simple. There are dozens of different languages spoken among these countries, but a few are predominate across the continent, Russian, German, French, Italian and English. A quarter of the population speaks English as a second language.

I don’t know about you, but I have at least a dozen more trips to Europe in mind!

I had big plans for European travel in 2019.. a tour of Italy, and another stop in Germany to visit my dearest friends. Then the world came to a stand still.

I continue to pray for stability, peace, and comfort to the many who have lost loved ones. And of course, for better times, when the world can open its doors again. I will be heading back to Europe then!
